Adapted by award-winning playwright Jean Tay and directed by Samantha Scott-Blackhall, Behind The Wall follows Tommy, a little mouse who ventures beyond a mysterious wall in the perfect city of Pura Pura, where he meets animals that talk and look different, like Al the Elephant, a worker from a faraway land. Behind The Wall shows us that, while people may look and sound very different, we are all the same on the inside, and just as capable of kindness.

This 30-minute film is designed for families with children 7 to 12 years old, and is accompanied by a 20-minute post-show activity video and digital activity booklet, which provides insights into the lives of our migrant worker friends.

Gateway Arts believes that creating a kinder world begins with a  culture of kindness in our own homes.

A thank you card will be included in the Behind The Wall post-show activity booklet for all patrons. We encourage all parents to print and decorate the thank you card together with your children, and post the completed card on social media, using the hashtags #BehindTheWall, #GatewayArtsSG and #KindnessStartsAtHome.

You can give these thank you cards to any migrant worker friend you meet, and we will also share these images with them!

Christmas Card Design Competition with HealthServe

Gateway Arts teamed up with HealthServe for our very first Christmas card design competition!

We received many heartwarming submissions from children across Singapore, and have selected 3 winners, who each received a $30 POPULAR voucher and tickets to catch Behind The Wall!

Theme: Bring healing and hope to our migrant worker friends this Christmas

The selected designs will be used for HealthServe’s upcoming Christmas campaign to their donors, partners and beneficiaries.

Check out the winning entries below:

“Thank you migrant workers!

Thank you so much to those of you who are working in the healthcare sector. You have helped to protect Singapore against COVID, risk your lives to care for the COVID patients, I want to be a nurse when I grow up!

Thank you so much to those of you who are working in the construction sector. You have helped to build our houses, shopping malls and roads. Your hard work under the sun and in the rain has paid off. We get to enjoy a beautiful Singapore.

Migrant workers, we appreciate you! Your contribution has given us HOPE to overcome this pandemic together!”

– Tan En Xin Elizabeth (8 years old)

“It’s hard to construct our buildings. I’m sure some of them also worked hard to build our Christmas tree structures and decorations around the island!

However, most of them do not have a chance to celebrate Christmas. In this picture, I have prepared a gift to give to them, and to invite them to celebrate Christmas with me and my family!”

– Joanna He Anqi (8 years old)

“Migrant workers work for everyone and build our homes and we are happy to celebrate for them. Let us all be together and love each other this Christmas!”

– Hasini Hari Prasad (6 years old)
