Synopsis

“Every Brilliant Thing” begins with the Narrator, played by Sharon Sum (The Monster in the Mirror and Titoudao), recounting a childhood memory. At seven years old, she was taken to see her mother in hospital, because, “Your mother’s done something stupid.” – her mother’s first suicide attempt. To uplift her mother, she starts compiling a list of all the brilliant things worth living for:

      1. Umbrella Motorbike Ice Cream
      2. Zero Point
      3. The Colour Yellow
      4. Rollercoasters
      5. Polly Pocket

As the list grows, so does the Narrator. We follow her journey into womanhood and realise the list is more than just that, it has become a source of comfort and resilience, helping her navigate the complexities of life.

Presented by Singapore Pools and produced by Gateway Arts, “Every Brilliant Thing” is a delightful and arresting one-person play by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe, directed by multi-award-winning and published playwright, director, actor, and designer, Oliver Chong. It is as much about depression, anger and heartbreak as it is a story of joy, forgiveness, and a celebration of the resilient spirit of man. An encouraging nudge towards finding brilliant things in the everyday. The Guardian described it as, “One of the funniest plays you’ll ever see about depression.”

This play is performed in a unique format, engaging the audience in a participatory manner and making them an integral part of the storytelling process.

Synopsis

From the award-winning playwright that brought you Boom and Everything but The Brain, Jean Tay’s SmartyPants and the Swordfish is a compelling immersive, interactive and inclusive theatre play that delves into Singapore’s history while taking a constructive look at the issue of bullying.

With acclaimed directors Samantha Scott-Blackhall and Tan Beng Tian at the helm, the story opens with a group of students investigating the legend of Redhill, probing to uncover how a young kampung boy met his demise at the hands of a jealous sultan. As they peel back the layers of this age-old tale, they uncover hidden truths, meet evil advisors and even fend off an attack by swordfishes!

Featuring a collaborative staging between mainstream actors and artists with disabilities, who will be manoeuvring colourful puppets to bring the play to life, the diverse casting underpins the importance to have empathy and respect for one another, regardless of differences.

SmartyPants and the Swordfish does not just re-tell history. Through a post-show dialogue, it engages young audiences to explore the dynamics of power and learn how to prevent bullying. The play further provides a platform for intellectually disabled artists to showcase their skills, gain professional experience and be recognised as equal contributors to the creative process.

Post-Show Materials

Gateway Arts is dedicated to delivering a holistic learning journey for children and youths. Our meticulously crafted post-show segment allows them to delve into intricate themes and cultivate a deeper appreciation for essential values.

Synopsis

When you’re standing on the edge…

“I want to be anywhere else but here,
Be anyone but me…” Shan

12 Going On 13 will resonate with anyone who has found themselves in that space where the weight of expectations crashes against the waves of uncertainty. Where fears of failing and falling loom larger than ever.

Meet Shan, 12 years old and on the cusp of something big. Her world is about to change – school, friendships, her parents’ marriage, and the overwhelming, unwanted task of growing up. It feels like she is standing on the edge of a precipice.

This play takes its audience on the often complex and terrifying journey of adolescence, sifting through the challenges of change, while highlighting the often overlooked need to lean on one’s community. It is a story about finding the courage to step forward, despite the uncertainties that lie ahead.

12 Going On 13 will make you laugh, cry and hug the people who matter to you. It is a timely reminder to seek help, find your footing, and know you are never alone.

Bring Us Together

An original theatrical film by Gateway Arts, My Invisible Life aims to encourage empathy, kindness, mutual respect, while promoting a positive mindset towards different community groups. The film delivers the message that there is a sense of shared humanity, that despite cultural or national differences, we all have common emotions, aspirations, and struggles. Through the film, we hope to reduce stereotypes and bridge the gap between Singaporeans and the migrant workers.

To encourage viewers to initiate social interactions between locals and migrant workers, we have organised “Bring Us Together!” for viewers (youths) to submit their ideas on paper plans, the events they would like to see taking place in 2024 for the migrant workers.

The response was overwhelming, Gateway Arts has received over 150 paper plans and we have shortlisted 50 of them. We would like to invite you to participate in our poll – to vote for the top 10 “Bring Us Together” events you would like to see taking place in 2024 for the migrant workers.

Thank you for your participation. The poll has closed and these are the Top 10 “Bring Us Together” events, as voted by you.

We encourage you to consider these ideas when organising your own event to connect with migrant workers.

[Show Ended]

Starring Evangel Wong and Zulfiqar Izzudin, I and You tackles pressing issues like youth isolation and mental wellness. In a report by The Straits Times (https://str.sg/vwRc), reclusive behavior among young people is on the rise due to factors like bullying, excessive social media use, and gaming. It could not be more fitting that we staged this production during Mental Health Awareness Month.

The play also included a post-show dialogue facilitated by TOUCH Mental Wellness.

Synopsis

Caroline is 17. She suffers from a liver disease and misses school a lot. She likes cats, Elvis, and photography.

Anthony is 17. He is charming, confident, does well academically and is the star basketball player on the school team. He likes jazz and plays the saxophone.

Caroline and Anthony could not be more different. Caroline lives with her single mother who spends most of the day working. Anthony’s father is a university professor who spends a lot of time with his son. Caroline lives in a flat, Anthony lives in a condo. Caroline and Anthony are classmates, but they barely know each other.

One afternoon, Anthony arrives unexpectedly at Caroline’s door with a copy of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, a group project for their Literature classThrough their (initially unwilling) analysis of the text, they discover similarities, share dreams, secrets, argue about music and slowly the walls come down, they bond, and their relationship deepens.
