Synopsis

From the award-winning playwright that brought you Boom and Everything but The Brain, Jean Tay’s SmartyPants and the Swordfish is a compelling immersive, interactive and inclusive theatre play that delves into Singapore’s history while taking a constructive look at the issue of bullying.

With acclaimed directors Samantha Scott-Blackhall and Tan Beng Tian at the helm, the story opens with a group of students investigating the legend of Redhill, probing to uncover how a young kampung boy met his demise at the hands of a jealous sultan. As they peel back the layers of this age-old tale, they uncover hidden truths, meet evil advisors and even fend off an attack by swordfishes!

Featuring a collaborative staging between mainstream actors and artists with disabilities, who will be manoeuvring colourful puppets to bring the play to life, the diverse casting underpins the importance to have empathy and respect for one another, regardless of differences.

SmartyPants and the Swordfish does not just re-tell history. Through a post-show dialogue, it engages young audiences to explore the dynamics of power and learn how to prevent bullying. The play further provides a platform for intellectually disabled artists to showcase their skills, gain professional experience and be recognised as equal contributors to the creative process.

Post-Show Materials

Synopsis

Daniel hates being in the spotlight. His classmate Rina is always trying to make Tik Tok videos with him, but he would much rather blend in than stand out.

Elsewhere in the school, Sanjay feels invisible. He works hard on the construction of the school’s sports complex, but he’s ignored by everyone. In a series of unexpected events, the two young men and their very different worlds collide.

The two find that they have more in common than they realised, but their unlikely friendship comes under pressure when Sanjay is accused of theft. Daniel has to make a difficult choice… to remain invisible or to help his new friend…

Bring Us Together

An original theatrical film by Gateway Arts, My Invisible Life aims to encourage empathy, kindness, mutual respect, while promoting a positive mindset towards different community groups. The film delivers the message that there is a sense of shared humanity, that despite cultural or national differences, we all have common emotions, aspirations, and struggles. Through the film, we hope to reduce stereotypes and bridge the gap between Singaporeans and the migrant workers.

To encourage viewers to initiate social interactions between locals and migrant workers, we have organised “Bring Us Together!” for viewers (youths) to submit their ideas on paper plans, the events they would like to see taking place in 2024 for the migrant workers.

The response was overwhelming, Gateway Arts has received over 150 paper plans and we have shortlisted 50 of them. We would like to invite you to participate in our poll – to vote for the top 10 “Bring Us Together” events you would like to see taking place in 2024 for the migrant workers.

Thank you for your participation. The poll has closed and these are the Top 10 “Bring Us Together” events, as voted by you.

We encourage you to consider these ideas when organising your own event to connect with migrant workers.
